Gir cow in a well-ventilated Gujarat dairy farm shed to prevent heat stress

How to Protect Cows and Buffaloes from Heat Stress?

As temperatures cross 40°C, high-yielding breeds like Gir cows and Jaffrabadi buffaloes suffer from heat stress, leading to a 20-30% drop in milk production and poor health.

Key Management Strategies

Housing

Ensure high ceilings in the shed. Use thatch or green nets to block direct sunlight.

Cooling Systems

Use fans and misting systems. For Jaffrabadi buffaloes, wallowing (paddling in water) or showering 3-4 times a day is essential.

Water

Animals need 3-5 times more water in summer. Provide cool, clean drinking water 24/7.

Feeding Time

Feed during cooler hours—early morning or late night. Avoid heavy feeding during peak afternoon.
